Learn to Create Illustrated Maps on Your iPad in Procreate

Learn to Create Illustrated Maps on Your iPad in Procreate

I absolutely love creating hand drawn maps.  They are perfect for commemorating a trip, making for friends and family, or for making an ad for a local event like an art gallery walk or local food spots.  I wanted to finally share my process for creating these maps, plus give you the brushes, textures, and stamps I like to use to create mine.

In the class, you’ll learn three different methods for creating illustrated maps on your iPad in Procreate.  When you take the class you’ll get all of the brushes I made to create my maps as free downloads, including texture brushes and a set of illustrated location marker stamps.

We’ll create 3 different projects in the class:

  • First we’ll create a playful illustrated map marking a few destinations and roads in a city.  I’ll show you some ways to decorate your map using drawings and stamps, plus some easy ways to add texture and variation to the composition.  You could use this process to create a restaurant map, an art gallery map, or just mark your favorite places in a city.

  • Next we’ll create a detailed drawing of a city’s streets, rivers, and major landmarks.  We’ll use the structure of the city to create an abstract watercolor painting with bold pencil lines.  Then we’ll remove the pencil lines to get a soft watercolor abstract view of the area.

  • Last we’ll create a detailed road map inside the outline of a city’s perimeter.  I’ll show you an easy trick for getting a complimentary color palette for your map, then we’ll use bold color to fill in sections of the city. We’ll add illustrations and text to highlight the city’s popular attractions, then add texture to give the map a real paper feel.

You can use the processes you learn in this class to create gifts for friends and family, or you could create digital downloads or printable images for your business.

The great thing about this process is that you can adjust the drawing for your skill level.  So if you’re new to drawing and don’t know where to start, this is a great class for you because I’ll show you tons of easy tracing tips for getting started, but if you’ve been drawing for a long time you can really use your illustration skills to create a highly detailed and eye-catching map.   All you need to take this class is your iPad and a stylus.  I’ll be using the Apple Pencil, but you could use any stylus, or even your finger.

Podcasts for Creatives | Magic Lessons with Elizabeth Gilbert

Podcasts for Creatives | Magic Lessons with Elizabeth Gilbert

If you’re like me, you usually have a podcast playing in your earbuds while you draw, cook, exercise, or just pace around the house.  I wanted to share with you some of my favorite podcast finds from this year, so over the next few weeks I’ll post a few of my favorites here on the blog.

The first one is not a new podcast, but it’s totally worth going back and listening to the episodes.  Magic Lessons was a podcast by Liz Glibert (NY Times Bestselling Author of tons of incredible books like Eat, Pray, Love and Big Magic).  The podcast uses the principles in her book Big Magic to help real life creators get through tough creative blocks.

You’ll hear everyone from telemarketers who want to start writing short stories to bestselling authors who share their own methods for overcoming creative blocks.  I absolutely loved this podcast and was so sad to see it end!  Luckily the archives are still available here.

I found this podcast when I was in a particularly distressing creative drought, and I know the tips and advice in this podcast helped me get over the hump and start creating again.

3 Ways to Animate Your iPad Lettering

3 Ways to Animate Your iPad Lettering

For years, I have looked longingly at animations I see online and wished that one day, I too could be one of those amazing illustrators who creates animations using the incredibly complicated and expensive Adobe After Effects program.  Then I realized I could recreate the same style I was seeing online with just a few steps on my iPad!  Here is a look at one of the techniques:

The process is about five million times easier than animating on a computer, and it literally only takes a few minutes to learn.  Ready to start animating your lettering?  Check out the class trailer.

In the class, you’ll learn how to turn your hand lettering into animations that make your lettering really stand out online.  I’ll show you several different types of lettering animation, so you can choose the method that works best for your personal style.

You’ll learn:

  • how to create a simple animation with moving decorative elements
  • the basics of the RoughAnimator app
  • a few different ways to make your hand drawn elements move across the page.
  • how to turn an image made in Procreate into an animation using RoughAnimator
  • how to create a hand drawn animation that shows the movement of your pencil or stylus
  • how to use multiple colors in an animation, so you can turn any quote into a multi-colored animation.

All you need to take this class is your iPad, Procreate, and a stylus.  The RoughAnimator app is optional, but it’s only a few dollars in the app store, so once you see how fun it is to use, you’ll probably want to buy it. If you’re growing your hand lettering business or online following, animating your lettering is a great way to get noticed online.
